About Our School

Llancarfan is situated in the heart of the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan, between Barry and Cowbridge. The school has a playing field and a tarmac playground colourfully designed with stimulating educational games. There is also a "Quiet Area" for children wishing to engage in quieter playtime activities. The original main school, built in 1875, houses the office, staffroom and the reference library for staff and children. There is also a large teaching area which serves as a base for Key Stage 1. The area is carpeted with a "wet" area for practical activities. There are toilet facilities for staff and pupils within the main building. There are three further teaching areas all with toilet facilities. Class 5 (Year 5 and 6), Class 4 (Year 5 and Year 4) and Class 3 (Year 4 and Year 3 pupils) are based in separate demountable classrooms. All demountable classrooms have their own wet areas for practical activities, cloakrooms and toilet facilities. At the end of June 2000 our new building was completed - a double teaching area to be used by the whole school for a variety of activities.

Much of the teaching at Llancarfan is topic based and is carefully planned to achieve National Curriculum objectives, whilst providing a broad, balanced curriculum. Subjects are generally integrated into a topic rather than being taught in isolation.

Learning is a continuous process and pupils acquire knowledge at varying speeds. Each pupil has his / her "readiness" stage at which appropriate opportunities, resources and teaching are provided to enable the child to grasp what is being taught, before proceeding to the next concept.
